Contents | Outline:What was the relationship between metal, mines, and power in early modern Japan?
This exploratory talk discusses Japan’s “mineral politics,” and asks how mines can help us better understand the political and economic dynamics that transformed Japan from the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries.
Finally, Dr. Batts will argue for mining’s importance for comparative research and global Japanese Studies, and introduce his current project within that context.
